What Are Habitats?

--

Hello students!

Today I will be introducing the topic of our Project Based Learning Assignment for this month…. habitats!

For this PBL assignment we are going to be exploring and answering our guiding question of how we can take care of our environment and improve habitat life in our school campus. Through our assignment we will be exploring habitats, ecosystems, how the food chain in different habitats work, as well as some different ways to preserve habitats and educate our peers on these conservation habits. We will get into more depth about our project later on this week.

First we need to start our research and explore what exactly is a habitat?

A habitat is an area that is lived in by a particular species of animal, plant, or other type of organism. A habitat is made up of four different and essential things for an organism to survive: food, space, shelter, and water. Below is a link to a great introductory video summarizing what habitats are.

Most animals live in one type of environment because they are better suited towards. We call these adaptations in animals, for example, frogs have webbed feet because they are adapted to their wet environment so they can swim easier in water. Just as animals have specific characteristics for the habitat they live in, so do plants! We can take a cactus for example and see its stiff big stems to store water because they are primarily found in desert regions that do not receive much rain anyways. Click the link below to explore the 8 different types of habitats we have on Earth.

Habitat Hunt Class Activity

Now that we’ve learned some key facts about what a habitat consists of, I would like you guys to take a look at our Habitat Hunt handout. I will be sending out an email with the PDF link if you wish to print but I will also be handing these out during class. Choose a habitat from the 8 described in the link above and fill out this sheet to learn more about the kinds of things habitats consist of.

This handout will be due in class to me. As the week goes on I will be posting more helpful resources to assist you in your research of habitats for our PBL assignment. If you have any questions, please ask me!

Have fun students!
